Manufacturing 4.0: What's Happening and What's Ahead?
Manufacturing has been digitized over the past decade. This decade will add intelligence. Cognitive computing and machine learning are finally living up to the promises of “artificial intelligence” that we’ve heard for the past sixty years. The benefits will include faster commercialization of new coating materials; “digital twins” for machine maintenance; improved factory floor safety; more economical and sustainable operations; a resilient and responsive supply chain. But managers will also face a human challenge: headcount may shrink, even as the required skills increase.
